“In the midst of the climate crisis and global pandemic, it is imperative that governments strengthen the resilience of their infrastructure, economies, and public health. Through this partnership, we are accelerating our transition to a distributed, affordable, and clean energy future with a committed and coordinated approach across all government agencies to expedite the successful completion of this initiative—delivering tremendous benefits to all Sint Maarten citizens and businesses. By joining the Island Resilience Partnership, we are creating a better future for everyone who lives on and visits our beautiful island.”

“I am proud to announce that the Kingdom of Tonga has formalized a partnership with the Island Resilience Partnership to accelerate our transition to 100% renewable energy and exceed our Nationally Determined Contributions, while reducing the cost of energy and strengthening the resilience of our infrastructure and communities. In order for the world to solve the climate crisis, we must learn from each other and adapt in the face of humanity's existential crisis. I'm confident that we will collectively succeed.”

Scalable Impact:

“When the Independent State of Samoa formed its partnership with GridMarket and the Island Resilience Partnership, it was a demonstration of our faith in the process because not only were we committed to achieving our national energy goals, but developing a 'genuine, durable partnership' based on mutual trust, shared responsibility and accountability,” “We knew this partnership could be a model for other island governments around the world to adapt and emulate, which was always our unspoken wish. It is humbling to see our proven partnership in the Pacific being warmly welcomed in its new home in the Caribbean. I congratulate the government of Sint Maarten for its climate leadership and our innovative partners for building upon Samoa's success."

What is the Island Resilience Partnership?

The IRP is a social enterprise that amplifies climate action and scales climate solutions. Our mission is to help keep global warming below the 1.5C goal of the Paris Agreement. Through the development of public-private partnerships and cross-sector collaborations, IRP helps countries achieve climate mitigation and climate adaptation goals.

Why it matters?

Small island developing states and coastal communities are on the front lines of climate change and face an existential crisis with rising oceans, more frequent natural disasters, and an increasingly fragile environment. The global transition towards renewable energy and resilient infrastructure is beginning to happen, but not at the scale or the speed required to avert the worst effects of the climate crisis. The IRP was created to address the biggest challenge in the fight against climate change: time.

How we are doing it?

When it comes to national energy transformations, the IRP utilizes GridMarket’s predictive analytics, mapping technology, and competitive marketplace to design, develop, and deploy distributed energy resources for island nations.

“In Palau’s case, 40 companies bid to produce power for the island nation of 17,000 people, and out of the final four selected at the final stage, the company eventually chosen has reduced the price of power by 30 percent.”

“In Palau, a short list of renewable energy companies are now under consideration for the work, and installation will begin soon. Because they saw that the model can work, the Republic of Palau partnered with EarthX, Gridmarket, and the Global Island Partnership to form the “Island Resilience Partnership” to do the same work on other small island nations–among the countries most at risk from climate change and most in need of options for local, affordable energy, but that might otherwise have difficulty making the shift.”
